Renal Nutrition Therapy
Service Description
A kidney friendly diet is for those who have damaged kidneys and need to change their nutrition intake in order to help slow the process of the damage. Kidney disease can cause other complications like diabetes and high blood pressure. Changing certain nutrients in your diet can help improve your overall kidney function and health. Some signs and symptoms of kidney disease include: - swelling - urinating too often or not enough - muscle cramps - nausea and vomiting - loss of appetite This option requires a 3-session minimum with your dietitian as this diet is more complex and the goal is not only to learn about the diet, but to understand how the diet and your intake correlate and discuss how to implement changes as needed. During the first 60-minute session we will; - Go over your medical history and your journey. - Review what a kidney friendly diet is in detail: reviewing protein, potassium, phosphorus, and sodium as these are main components of a healthy diet for balanced kidney function. - Discuss main points in your diet and how they relate to your kidney function. During the second 60-minute session we will; - Review a diet diary of a weekly intake and micro analyze your nutrient intake of protein, potassium, phosphorus, and sodium. - Personalize your numeric goals of protein, carbohydrate, and fat intake according to your needs and evidence-based guidelines for proper kidney function. - If you have labs done, we will go over what your results were and how they relate to your nutrition. During your third 60-minute session we will; - Review a diet recall accessing all key macro and micronutrients. - Discuss how implementation is going and what you may find as easier changes vs what struggles might have occurred. - Discuss how this diet will relate to your lifestyle long term, and what further changes can be done to keep improving your kidney function. - Understand the physical and emotional parts of this diet, and how it will affect your future overall health.
